A Teaching & Learning Framework for E-Learning Systems: Application of Learning & Perceptual Styles

In this study, we carry out a survey of the preferred learning and perceptual styles of students at the University of Mauritius to find out about their learning preferences. We find no particular relationship between students’ learning styles and their perceptual styles. We do an evaluation of current e-learning courses currently delivered at the University of Mauritius concerning interactivity, pedagogy and personalized instruction. We find that current learning models and instructional design approaches do not fit in students preferred ways of learning. We therefore propose a framework for web-based learning that provides adaptive tutoring using hypermedia courseware based on student and tutoring models that takes into account a personalized approach towards tutoring that will improve the teaching and learning process.
